Trauma
A Path To Self-Realisation
An Evening with Gabor Maté
Early Birds ends in:
Trauma: A Path To Self-Realisation
25 Sept - 19:00 – 23:00 BST (British Summer Time)
Most of us aspire to live in states of peace, happiness and joy. When these states are challenged, people are ill-equipped to face the mental and emotional challenges that past trauma can awaken.
Western society in general looks at medicine as the answer and tends to treat mind and body as separate entities—a view that disregards the insights and teachings of ancient human wisdom. Paradoxically, such dualism also ignores the findings of modern science. The brain and body systems that process emotions are intimately connected with the hormonal apparatus, the nervous system, and in particular the immune system. Emotional stress, especially of the hidden kind that people are not aware of, undermines immunity, disrupts the body’s physiological milieu and can prepare the ground for disease.
Both traditional teaching and up-to-date research show that trauma and states of challenge can be seen not only as sufferings to overcome, but as pathways to unlock more illuminating states of consciousness and a deeper understanding of the self. In turn, these can lead to long term emotional and behavioural change and resilience that offer greater access to peace and contentment and healing.
Highlights of this talk will include:
- What is trauma and its mental and physiological consequences
- The mind/body unity as explained by modern science (psychoneuroimmunology)
- How the early environment "programs" us physiologically and psychologically
- Becoming aware of stressful patterns of feeling and behaviour.
- The nature of the true self and how we can connect to it—to ourselves, that is—by working through trauma.
