The Transformation Process from Physical Desire to Divine Awareness
Part 3 of 3: Practical Wisdom for the Journey
In Part 1 and Part 2, we explored the nature of sexual energy as the dormant kundalini power and mapped the seven chakras as levels of consciousness through which this energy must ascend. Now we come to the most crucial question: How does this transformation actually occur? What are the stages, practices, dangers, and signs of authentic progress?
Elisabeth Haich’s work and David Hawkins’ consciousness research converge on a fundamental truth: transformation of sexual energy is not primarily a matter of technique but of consciousness itself. While practices matter, what ultimately determines whether kundalini energy rises or remains coiled is the level of awareness we bring to the process.
As Haich emphasizes: ‘This book, like every book on Yoga, only has genuine value if we put into practice what has been written and try it out on ourselves. No matter how beautifully we may describe the best and most nourishing foods and the most refreshing drinks to a hungry and thirsty man, and no matter how avidly he may read, and only read, these descriptions, he will never be sated.’
This final installment offers practical guidance drawn from both ancient wisdom and modern understanding, always with the caveat that theoretical knowledge must be verified through direct experience.
The Natural Process: How Transformation Begins
Transformation of sexual energy begins naturally, not through elaborate practices but through the ordinary frustrations and delays of life itself. When sexual desire arises but cannot be immediately satisfied, whether due to social conventions, lack of opportunity, or conscious choice, something remarkable occurs.
The energy that would have been discharged sexually instead builds up, creating internal pressure. This accumulated energy cannot remain static; it must find expression. Unable to flow outward through the sexual organs, it begins to flow upward through the nervous system, seeking other channels of release.
Haich describes this natural mechanism: ‘During this waiting period the tension mounts within him and, since it does not find immediate release, this energy tries to discharge itself in another way, through the nerve channels. The unreleased tension builds up and thus man is charged with ever-quickening vibrations and frequencies. If, however, the frequencies of an energy increase, the energy is also no longer what it was previously. Thus, the first transformation of sexual energy, however small, has already occurred!’
This is why sexual frustration, paradoxically, has been the engine of human cultural and spiritual evolution. The poet whose love is unrequited writes immortal verses. The philosopher whose desires go unfulfilled creates systems of thought that transform civilizations. The mystic who surrenders sexual expression entirely discovers dimensions of ecstasy that transcend physical pleasure.
In each case, sexual energy, is able to transmute into higher forms: emotional depth, intellectual brilliance, artistic creativity, spiritual realization. The energy itself does not disappear; it simply manifests at a different frequency.
The Crucial Distinction: Conservation vs. Repression
Before proceeding further, we must address the most dangerous misunderstanding in spiritual practice: the confusion between conservation of sexual energy and repression of sexual desire.
Repression occurs when sexual desire is denied, suppressed, or pushed into the unconscious through fear, shame, or rigid ideology. The energy is still there but is blocked, creating psychological pathology, anxiety, obsession, projection, compulsion. Modern psychology has thoroughly documented the destructive effects of sexual repression.
Conservation and transmutation are entirely different. Here, sexual energy is acknowledged, understood, and consciously redirected. There is no denial, no shame, no fear. The practitioner recognizes sexual energy as divine creative power and chooses to work with it consciously rather than expending it unconsciously.
Haich is explicit about this: ‘We must remember that a person can only transform sexual energy when he is capable of experiencing this energy, that is, when his sexual potency is at its peak! For how could he transform something that he does not possess? It is therefore very harmful for those who would transform sexual energy to suppress sexuality through ascetic practices before they have reached the requisite maturity.’
This means that authentic spiritual development does not begin with celibacy or abstinence. It begins with healthy sexuality, with actually experiencing and understanding sexual energy in its physical form. Only then, when one has developed the nervous system’s capacity to handle higher frequencies and when authentic spiritual yearning arises naturally, does conscious conservation become appropriate.
David Hawkins emphasized this same principle in his consciousness research. He noted that attempts to force spiritual development, to ‘skip levels’ on the Map of Consciousness, inevitably lead to distortion and pathology. Development must be organic, proceeding naturally from one level to the next as the individual becomes capable of sustaining higher frequencies.
The Practice: What Actually Works
While each tradition offers specific techniques, certain principles appear universally:
- Foundation in Ethics
All authentic spiritual traditions emphasize ethical development as the foundation for energy work. In yoga, this is yama and niyama – ethical restraints and observances. In Christianity, it is virtue. The reason is practical as higher levels of consciousness operate in a higher moralistic way.
As Haich warns: ‘Only knowing people who have not preserved the balance in developing their nerve and brain centres could place the higher spiritual manifestations of the Self, such as literature, theatre, film, art, music, in the service of the lowest powers.’
Kundalini energy, being divine creative power, amplifies whatever is present in consciousness. If egotism, lust for power, or moral corruption exist, awakening kundalini will magnify these qualities to the detriment of the soul of the practitioner. Ethical development, cultivating compassion, truthfulness, non-violence, self-restraint, and contentment, ensures that when higher energies awaken, they serve the evolution of consciousness rather than its corruption and awaken a supreme feeling of bliss inside the practitioner.
- Physical Preparation
The nervous system must be prepared to handle higher frequencies. Hatha yoga, physical postures, breathing exercises, cleansing practices, forms the foundation of classical yogic training. These practices increase the ‘resistance’ of the nervous system, just as electrical wiring must be rated for higher voltages.
Haich recommends specific practices: headstand, shoulder stand, and candle pose. These inversions, by reversing the usual flow of energy in the body, help activate dormant centers, move blood and encourage the safe movement kundalini. Pranayama, conscious breath work directly affects the flow of prana (life force) through the subtle energy channels.
But physical practices alone are insufficient. They prepare the vehicle; they do not provide the fuel or the direction. This comes from consciousness itself.
- Meditation and Mindfulness
The core practice is awareness itself. Learning to look inwards enabling the soul to observe desire when it arises without immediately acting on it or suppressing it. This cultivation of the witnessing consciousness is part of what enables transformation.
When we can observe sexual energy as energy rather than immediately identifying with desire, something profound shifts. The energy that would have been dissipated through unconscious expression becomes available for the great work of developing ones own consciousness to higher levels.
- Service and Devotion
Perhaps most important is the orientation of consciousness toward something beyond personal gratification. Haich notes that the white magician ‘remains at his own centre, but from there, from his innermost divine Self, he radiates his pure love to all living creatures, so that every living creature finds its own centre, while he remains uninfluenced within his centre so that he not only preserves his right of self-determination, but with the help of the white magician develops to an even higher level.’
In addition to this, when consciousness is oriented toward service, toward using whatever gifts and energies we have for the benefit of others, kundalini energy naturally begins to transmute. Not through force but through love itself.
The Dangers: What Can Go Wrong
Haich and Hawkins both emphasize that working with kundalini energy carries real dangers if approached improperly:
Premature Awakening
Attempting to awaken kundalini through forceful techniques before the nervous system is ready can cause serious physical and psychological damage, intense pain, emotional instability, hallucinations, psychosis, fatigue and more. This is why authentic traditions require years of preparation and work only under qualified guidance.
Irregular Development
When higher centers activate before lower ones are integrated, it creates profound imbalance. Haich notes: ‘Earthly life… causes some of the higher centres to emerge from their latent state and become active before the lower centres which should be activated first. This irregularity causes all kinds of mental and physical abnormalities, which can, and alas do, lead to serious disintegration of the ego!’
Modern civilization, with its emphasis on intellectual development while ignoring emotional and ethical growth, creates this irregular development on a massive scale.
Spiritual Bypass
Using spirituality to avoid psychological or emotional work rather than to deal with it. This creates a false enlightenment, spiritual knowledge without corresponding development in other areas of life.
Black Magic
Using awakened spiritual powers for personal gain, manipulation, or harm. When higher energies activate in an egocentric consciousness, the result is what traditions call black magic, immensely destructive both to the practitioner and to those affected by them.
Haich’s warning is stark: ‘Black magicians always suffer a dreadful death!’ The energy that should have served evolution turns against its misuser.
Signs of Authentic Progress
How do we know if a transformation is actually occurring? Both Haich and Hawkins point to consistent markers:
Increasing Inner Peace
As consciousness rises, there is a natural increase in peace, contentment, and inner stability. Anxiety and fear diminish. The need for external validation decreases.
Expanding Love
Love becomes less possessive, less demanding, more unconditional. Compassion extends to an ever-widening circle. Empathy deepens.
Reduced Reactivity
Things that once triggered strong emotional reactions lose their charge. One responds rather than reacts. Equanimity increases.
Natural Ethics
Right action becomes effortless, not from should or ought, but because consciousness naturally aligns with what serves the whole. As Hawkins noted, at higher levels of consciousness, ‘sin’ becomes literally impossible, not because of moral restriction but because one can no longer identify with actions that would cause harm.
Physical Health
Properly awakened kundalini energy brings increased vitality, better health, enhanced immune function. The body becomes a clearer, more refined vehicle for consciousness.
Creative Expression
As kundalini transforms, it becomes available for other forms of creation. Ideas flow more freely. Artistic impulses emerge. The desire to contribute and serve intensifies.
Reduction in intimacy
Importantly, authentic transformation does not create sexual repression or obsession. Rather, sexuality becomes less compulsive, less urgent. One can enjoy physical intimacy when appropriate, while no longer being driven by it.
The Ultimate Realization
At the culmination of the journey, a profound recognition dawns: sexual energy and spiritual energy are us.
What changes is not the energy but our relationship to it, our consciousness of it. At the first chakra, we experience this power as physical urge. At the seventh chakra, we experience it as pure consciousness, as ‘I AM THAT I AM,’ as God itself.
Haich expresses this ultimate truth: ‘How can death have power over me if I am life itself? How could life die? When we are able to mobilize from their latent, dormant condition the nerve and brain centres which bear the higher vibrations as resistance for the higher the state of consciousness, the higher the frequencies and vibrations active in the body, then we are also able to direct creative power higher or lower on Jacob’s ladder as we please and to use it at our discretion.’
The saint or God-man has not killed sexuality, they have realized what sexuality truly is. They have become consciously identical with the very power that manifests as sexual desire in the unconscious and as divine love in the awakened.
This is why Hawkins could state with such certainty that kundalini is sexual energy. Not in the reductionist sense that spirituality is ‘just’ sublimated sex, but in the profound recognition that sexual energy is the biological manifestation of the divine creative principle itself, the same power that creates galaxies, that moves through all life, that is consciousness itself in its most primal, most potent form.
Conclusion: The Sacred Work
The transformation of sexual energy into spiritual consciousness is perhaps the most sacred work a human being can undertake. It is literally the process by which we evolve from biological creatures driven by unconscious impulses to conscious beings aware of our divine nature.
This work is not for everyone, nor should it be. Many people are rightly focused on other aspects of life, raising families, pursuing careers, contributing to society. These too are sacred, these too involve the transformation of energy, just at different frequencies.
But for those who feel the call, for those who sense that there is something more, that physical pleasure alone cannot satisfy the deepest longing of the soul, the path is clear. Sexual energy, properly understood and consciously worked with, is the key that unlocks the door to higher consciousness.
The journey requires patience, discipline, ethical development, proper guidance, and above all, consciousness of the creator of all life. But the rewards transcend anything that can be described, the discovery that what we sought in sexual union with another exists within as the union of consciousness with its own source.
As both Elisabeth Haich and David Hawkins recognized, we are not meant to remain at the level of unconscious desire. We are meant to awaken. Sexual energy – kundalini- is the very power that enables this awakening.
May we use this sacred gift wisely.
Final Reflections
The ancient wisdom contained in Elisabeth Haich’s book ‘Sexual Energy and Yoga’ and validated by David Hawkins’ consciousness research offers a map for human transformation that is both timeless and urgently relevant. In an era where sexuality has been both overemphasized and misunderstood, where spiritual practice is often divorced from its biological foundations, this understanding reunites what should never have been separated.
Sexual energy is not something to transcend through denial, nor is it merely a biological function to be indulged without consciousness. It is the very substance of life itself, the divine creative power in its most accessible form, the ladder by which we can ascend from unconsciousness to God-realization.
The question each of us must answer is: What will we do with this power? Will we expend it unconsciously in pursuit of momentary pleasure? Or will we work with it consciously, allowing it to fuel our evolution toward higher states of awareness?
The choice, as always, is ours. The power is already within us. The path has been mapped by those who have gone before. Now it is simply a matter of taking the first step—and then the next, and the next—climbing Jacob’s Ladder one rung at a time, from the darkness of unconscious desire toward the light of divine awareness.
The serpent waits, coiled at the base of the spine. Will you awaken it?
